1. Guidelines for Clean Clothing
Islam places a significant emphasis on wearing clean and pure clothing during worship. The following guidelines outline how Muslims should ensure that their clothes are clean:
a. Avoiding Najasa on Clothes
- Remove visible impurities: Any visible impurity such as blood, urine, feces, or other unclean substances must be washed off completely before performing Salah. It’s important to check your clothing for any traces of impurities before starting prayer.
- Use water for cleaning: When impurity comes in contact with clothing, the affected area should be washed with clean water until no sign of Najasa (color, smell, or residue) remains.
- Drying clothes: After washing, ensure that clothes are properly dried and free from any contaminants.
b. Wearing Modest and Clean Attire
- Covering Awrah: In Salah, the parts of the body that must be covered (called Awrah) should be appropriately concealed with clean clothing. For men, this means covering from the navel to the knees, and for women, the entire body except the face, hands, and feet.
- Wearing presentable attire: It is recommended to wear the best and cleanest clothes for prayer, as an expression of respect for worship. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encouraged Muslims to dress well for Salah, especially for Friday prayers.
c. Changing Clothes After Impurities
- If the clothes become soiled with impurities, change into clean garments before performing Salah.
- If no clean clothes are available, one must wash the soiled area until it is pure before praying.
2. Ensuring a Clean Place for Salah
A clean and pure place is essential for performing Salah. Here are the key guidelines for maintaining cleanliness in the place of worship:
a. Checking for Najasa
- Surface cleanliness: Before starting Salah, ensure that the surface (floor, prayer mat, or ground) is free from impurities. If any Najasa is present, the affected area must be cleaned thoroughly or avoided during prayer.
- Clean prayer mat: Use a clean prayer mat (Sajjadah) to provide a clean area for Salah. This prevents contact with impurities and ensures a hygienic place for worship.
- Inspecting the area: If Salah is performed outdoors or in an unfamiliar place, carefully check the area to ensure it is clean, especially from dirt, mud, or any impurity.
b. Avoiding Contamination
- Remove footwear: In mosques and homes, Muslims often remove their shoes before entering prayer areas to prevent bringing dirt or impurities inside.
- Clean surroundings: Ensure that the surrounding area is free from items that may contaminate the place of worship, such as food, waste, or other impurities.
3. Handling Impurities on Clothing
In Islam, handling and removing impurities from clothes is necessary for maintaining Taharah. Here are some specific rules:
a. Washing Impurities
- Water as the primary cleanser: Water is the primary method for removing Najasa. When an impurity touches your clothes, wash the affected area with clean water until it is entirely pure.
- Use of detergents: In modern times, using soaps and detergents to remove impurities is acceptable, especially for stubborn stains like blood or heavy dirt. However, the final rinse should be with clean water.
b. Repeated Washing
- If the impurity is difficult to remove, wash the clothes multiple times until no sign (color, smell, or residue) of the impurity remains.
c. Special Cases:
- Dog saliva: If dog saliva comes into contact with clothing, wash the area seven times, one of which should be with soil or earth, as per the Hadith.
- Pig-related impurities: Similar to dog saliva, if anything related to pigs contaminates your clothes, it should be washed thoroughly, following the same steps.
d. Urgent Situations
- Perform Salah with effort: If, despite making reasonable efforts to clean your clothes, the impurity cannot be fully removed, and prayer time is about to end, you can still perform Salah. However, you should clean the impurity as soon as possible afterward.
e. Unseen Impurities:
- If you are unaware of any impurity on your clothing and only discover it after Salah, the prayer is still valid. Once the impurity is noticed, you must clean it before performing future prayers.
4. Importance of Purity in Salah
- Hadith on Cleanliness: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized that “Allah is pure and loves purity.” Maintaining pure clothing and surroundings for prayer reflects a Muslim’s devotion to cleanliness and worship.
- Salah and Taharah: Salah is only valid if the person, their clothing, and the place of prayer are pure and free from impurities.
